The Leander, a cruiser, was part of the Royal Navy's New Zealand Division and was transferred to the New Zealand navy during World War II. K5783 by then had been lost when it sank in 300 fathoms at Aitutaki on July 15, 1939, after slipping from the crane while being lifted on to the HMS Achilles, a sistership of the Leander. K5783 was attached to the HMS Leander at the time of the photo. The Leander, a cruiser, was part of the Royal Navy's New Zealand Division and was transferred to the New Zealand navy during World War II. K5783 by then had been lost when it sank in 300 fathoms at Aitutaki on July 15, 1939, after slipping from the crane while being lifted on to the HMS Achilles, a sistership of the Leander. Both aircraft visited the airshow at Vancouver in 1937 and this photo was most probably taken there. The badge on the tailfin, a lion on waves, is Exeter's. A Walrus is being hoisted aboard in Gibraltar. Its ship may be HMS Cornwall, although the cruiser is reported to have been in St Tropez on the given date! If it is indeed Cornwall's aircraft, the fuselage band should be pale blue. The ship with four funnels in the background is a US Navy destroyer, which seems quite odd here in 1938.
