Registered ZK-AMJ but appears to have remained in its RNZAF markings until broken up in 1949. Parts went to Amphibian Airways in Papua New Guinea. K5783 was attached to the HMS Leander at the time of the photo. The Leander, a cruiser, was part of the Royal Navy's New Zealand Division and was transferred to the New Zealand navy during World War II. K5783 by then had been lost when it sank in 300 fathoms at Aitutaki on July 15, 1939, after slipping from the crane while being lifted on to the HMS Achilles, a sistership of the Leander. No record of this aircraft can be found, other than it was registered to Scottish Aviation from 10 April 1947 until withdrawn in 1959. It is looking eminently preservable here, but sadly seems to have been scrapped.

Walrus K8341 / 780 was carried by the cruiser HMS Exeter in the Pacific, together with K8343 / 769. Both aircraft visited the airshow at Vancouver in 1937 and this photo was most probably taken there. The badge on the tailfin, a lion on waves, is Exeter's. K8341 may have become a victim of the German pocket battleship Graf Spee when her gunfire struck Exeter off the Rio de la Plata on 13 December 1939. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

Aircraft of HMS Leander on Christmas Island, which lies south of Java and was then administered from Singapore. Reportedly there was an airstrip near the South Point phosphate quarry but seaplanes would beach at Flying Fish Cove. A Walrus is being hoisted aboard at Gibraltar. Its ship may be HMS Cornwall, although the cruiser is reported to have been in St Tropez on the given date! If it is indeed Cornwall's aircraft, the fuselage band should be pale blue. The ship with four funnels in the background is a US Navy destroyer, which seems quite odd here in 1938. However, USS Manley (DD-74) was indeed around to protect American interests during the Spanish Civil War.

Can you imagine a lumbering Walrus departing the catapult of HMS Exeter at an alarmingly low speed? The envisaged role of gunnery spotting hardly happened in wartime but the type, while often disliked by its pilots, was probably useful for flying in groceries to its mother ships. Photo likely taken in Vancouver, BC where K8343 and the other Walrus, K8341, visited an airshow. Photo from: Naval History and Heritage Command

A Walrus at an airshow on the Candian west coast. K8343 / 769 and K8341 / 780 were on board the British cruiser Exeter which visited Victoria, BC in the summer of 1937. K8343 was probably no longer assigned to the ship at the time of the Battle of the River Plate in December 1939, in which Exeter's aircraft were damaged by shells from Admiral Graf Spee and dumped overboard.
