In June 1952, this Försvarets radioanstalt (FRA) DC-3, Sweden's National Defence Radio Establishment, took off on a classiifed flight over the Baltic. It is still unknown if the mission was to spy on the Soviet fleet, or to monitor the Soviet radar stations in the Baltic states. After two hours a distress call was picked up and all contact was lost. In 2003, the wreckage of the DC-3 on the Baltic seabed was found, with bullet holes discovered in both the wings and the fuselage. Russia has since admitted that a MiG-15 shot down the DC-3. The lower floor of the museum is given over to the tragedy.

Ex USAF DC-3A-360 42-5694 and SE-APZ. With the Swedish air force the aircraft was used for signal intelligence over the Baltic sea. On 13 June 1952 it was shot down by a Soviet MiG-15 during such a mission. All crew perished. In 2003 the wreckage was located and in 2004 lifted from the sea bed. It is displayed in the Flyvapenmuseum underneath the main hall in blueish light giving an impression how it was found in 2003.

An extraordinary feature of the expanded Flygvapenmuseum, opened on 12.6.10, are these Dakota remains. On 13.6.52, exactly 48 years before this photo, it was shot down over the Baltic by Soviet fighters while on a secret ELINT mission, checking installations in what are now Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Two Catalinas deployed on SAR after the incident were also attacked by Mig-15s. The Soviets denied the shoot-down till 1991 and the wreckage was not found until 2003
