It's a huge surprise to spot this one during dinner our time via FR24 around KLAF, but unfortunately it's heading to Frankort not KLAF. After driving for about 40 min from Lafayette to Frankfurt, we were finally able to see this beauty sitting quietly under the starry night. Background is the typical Corn Field and houses. In early August 2020 it was one of two Catalinas and several other warbirds that were shipped from NAS North Island to Hawaii aboard the USS Essex (LHD-2) for the 75th VJ-Day celebrations there, marking the end of WWII for the USA. After a smooth if rather late touchdown this Catalina veered starboard and smashed its port wingtip and float off on a steel harbour buoy. It spun round ,started shipping water and had to be towed to a slipway where it sank. Rebuilt at the old RAF Mount Batten seaplane base in the sound it was flown out some months later. Owner Bob Franks and passengers weren't seriously hurt, and the Catalina was still flying by 2020 (as N222FT).
