This was the second prototype of the TSR.2 (Tactical, Strike, Reconaissance). This example never flew as the project was cancelled by the Labour Government on Budget Day, 6th April, 1965 in favour of the inferior F111. TSR.2 was to perform, in the 1960s, a similar role to that now performed by the Tornado. Two airframes remain and the others together with all tooling were destroyed on Government orders, a travesty for the British aircraft industry. I, as a 12 year old can recall the public outcry.

Probably the finest UK aircraft never to serve in the RAF. First flew in September 1964; mach 2.5 in level flight; auto sortie capability; subsequently cancelled due to defence cut-backs. Seen at the RAF Cosford Aerospace Museum.

The TSR-2 exemplifies one of the saddest episodes in the long history of British aviation, leading to this famous quote from renowned aircraft designer Sir Sydney Camm "All modern aircraft have four dimensions: span, length, height and politics. TSR-2 simply got the first three right." This aircraft never actually flew, rather had almost been completed when the programme was cancelled.
