Powered by one T53 turboprop that drove two tilting ducted propellers, the VZ-4 was technically quite successful. The single airframe was built at Edmund Doak's factory at Torrance - Zamperini Field, California where the photograph was probably taken. Dayglo paint had been applied by the fall of 1959. The Doak VZ-4 was transferred from Edwards AFB to NASA Langley in the autumn of 1959. There is evidence of a press demonstration at Davison AAF, Fort Belvoir on 13 October of that year.
