Delivered as a C-130A in October 1958 but returned to Lockheed Marietta for fitment as C-130D with ski gear to allow support missions to the Arctic DEW-line stations. First assigned to the 61st TCS, 314th TCW, Sewart AFB, TN and then to 17th the TCS/21st CW, Elmendorf AFB, AK. Transferred to 109th TAG, NY ANG, Schenectady County Airport around 1975 and retired to Davis Monthan in February 1985, also being added to the inventory of the USAF Museum. Loaned to the Pima museum and on display there ever since, still carrying Spraylat preservative as applied for storage in AMARC

International Air Tattoo 1979. 139th TAS - 109th TAW - New York ANG. Delivered to the USAF as a C-130A and later converted to a C-130D. Retired to AMARC on 22 February 1985. Transferred to storage at the Pima Air Museum on 27 January 1997.

In the late 1950s the Air Force determined that there was a need for a new aircraft to support the "DEW Line" early-warning radar sites located on the far northern ice cap. Testing proved that the C-130 could be easily adapted to this job. A total of twelve ski-equipped C-130Ds were built in 1958. The ski/wheel landing gear allowed the planes to operate from either a normal runway or from ice and snow.
