A lot can be said for the F15 Flygmuseum at Söderhamn. Although somewhat crowded as this photo shows, the museum has creadted dioramas that clearly show unique features either with the aircraft or the unit. In this case, with the long-legged push-propellor J 21, they illurstrate the early adoption of ejector seats on the type. The first test of the seat developed by Bofors took place in 1943 with the first ejection from flight took place in July 1946. The aircraft carries the colours of 1. Divisionen of F15 Hälsinge flygflottilj which was based at Söderhamn.

This machine is actually a surviving J21A, 21286, modified to represent the extinct jet variant. 64 J21Rs were originally constructed and they were soon converted to A21R attack aircraft.

The J21 fighter and attack design was introduced into service in late 1945. This example is shown wearing code 'Blue A' of F8 wing. It was later moved to Malmen and was modified to represent a J21R.

The J21A, the first of the impressive lineage of Saab fighters. Because of its pusher propeller configuration it pioneered an ejection seat, and stands very tall. It was developed into the J21R jet.

Saab's J21R jet fighter retained the long legs of the J21A propeller plane, and compared to the otherwise rather similar Vampire it seems to stand twice as high!
