Aircraft of the Berlin - Königsberg - Moscow airline at the historic Devau airport in Königsberg, East Prussia, now Kaliningrad in the Russian exclave of that name. Deruluft was 50% owned by the Soviet government and 50% by Lufthansa, and this plane became D-1451 of Lufthansa in July 1928, but went back to Deruluft later. D-1079, the other Do B Merkur on the left, was operated by Deruluft from May 1927 until June 1928 under this German registration. Photo from: Lufthansa

The Merkur was widely used by Deutsche Luft Hansa, which had some 30 examples flying for it at one time. The type was also exported to Brazil, China, Colombia, Japan, and Switzerland. This replica was built in Hungary, painted in Hamburg and is one of the standout exhibits at this very interesting museum.

Carrying mail and one passenger from Hamburg on 14 March 1929, the crew could not find Cologne in fog and came down in a muddy field across the Dutch border, near Schaesberg, now part of Landgraaf. The worst damage was a broken propeller and the aircraft could be flown out two days later from a straw-covered strip. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)
