The rough, remote airstrip at Harbour Grace saw many successful and unsuccessful transatlantic flight attempts. Pilot Henry Brown and John Mears walked away from the wreck of Mears' Vega. Dog Tailwind ran off and was not found. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

NC13731 flew in spares - probably a propeller - for the transatlantic Vultee V-1 NR13770 Lady Peace which, flown by EAL chief pilot Dick Merrill, had landed in a bog at Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland. EAL boss and WWI ace Eddie Rickenbacker was on board the DC-2, but it was piloted by George Branson and Joe Kelly. Several planes carrying journalists also arrived. Photo from: Conception Bay Museum

An interesting photo of Lady Peace, the transatlantic aircraft famously stuffed with ping pong balls. During the return flight to New York it had lost fuel and made an emergency landing at Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland, damaging the propeller. Pilot Dick Merrill's employer, Eastern Air Lines, sent a DC-2, NC13731, to the Harbour Grace airstrip and spare parts reached Musgrave Harbour by boat. Lady Peace hopped over to Harbour Grace on 18 September and arrived in New York on 21 September 1936. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

Flown by noted former barnstorming pilot Duke Krantz, the 'news plane' came to Harbour Grace to cover the story of NR13770 Lady Peace. The DC-2, NC13731, delivered spare parts for the stranded Vultee. NC16515 was sold to Sweden in 1938 as SE-AHM and flew in Finland in 1940 during the Winter War, as OH-SLA.
