Actually WL168

This Meteor F8 carries the markings of WK864 which served with No 616 (South Yorkshire) Squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. It is in fact WL168.

WL168 in false markings

Carrying temporary markings QJ-G on the port side to represent aircraft of 92 Squadron flown in 1940 by Squadron Leader Geoffrey Wellum DFC. The starboard side carries the code QJ-E for the aircraft flown by Sergeant Ken Wilkinson of 19 Squadron.

Built in 1954 for RAF as WL168 serving 111 and 604 Squadrons. Allocated 7750M in 06.62. Displayed at Elvington as "WK864" wearing the markings of 616 (South Yorkshire) Squadron.

This Meteor is painted in 616 (S Yorkshire) Sqdn colours but is really WL168, WK864 having been scrapped at 33MU Lyneham in 1963. It was built at Hucclecote as part of the last batch of the 1,090 F.8s and entered service with 111 Sqdn at North Weald in 1954, soon moving to 604 (County of Middlesex) Sqdn at the same airfield, until the Royal Auxiliary Air Force was disbanded in March 1957. For two years from 1959 it was with the Armament Practice School (Sylt, W Germany) towing banner targets, then becoming a display airframe at various stations, arriving at the YAM in 1996 from Finningley.

This is actually WL168 introduced into service with 12MU at Kirkbride in 1954 and latterly as gate guardian at RAF Finningly.

The main theme for RIAT 2010 was a commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. To this end two Tucanos were painted in a pseudo-Spitfire camouflage scheme and looked a lot better than the black ones!
