This aircraft crashed onto USS America in the Persian Gulf 15 February 1991 during Operation Desert Storm.

1966: TOS USN as A-6A. From 5/66 to 1968 it served in VA-65, twice deployed for combat in Vietnam. 1968: Converted to A-6B. Deployed again to Vietnam. Ca.1972: Converted to A-6E. From 1977 to 1980 served with VMA (AW)-121. 5/77 to 5/78: Deployed to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. 1981: VA-196, NAS Whidbey Island, WA. By 1987 it began serving the following units: VMA(AW)-533, VMA(AW)-224, VMA(AW)-332 and late 1990 back to VMA(AW)-224, deployed to Sheikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain for Operation Desert Storm. 1992: VA-52 at NAS Whidbey Island. 1/95 Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ. 16 Mar 1999: SOC.

This Intruder was sunk in realising an artificial reef at Ponce de Leon (FL) in 1996.

Marine Attack Squadron (All Weather) 533 'Hawks' operated the A-6 Intruder since 1965. Soon after the transition to the Intruder the squadron was deployed to Vietnam to support combat operations. In 1975 they returned to Continental US where they were based at MCAS Cherry Point (NC). In 1976, the A-6A was replaced by the more modern A-6E. With that aircraft the Hawks deployed for another combat tour, this time to the Gulf War in 1990. In 1992 the A-6E was replaced by the F/A-18D.
