VAW-115 1976 US Bicentennial aircraft markings.

Slide taken from the flight deck of USS Midway. This was the Midlink Exercise Airshow staged for visiting dignitaries of the participating countries, including the Shah of Iran. Here we have the unusual combo of an E-2B from VAW-115 leading EA-6A 156990 of VMAQ-2. VMAQ-2 provided a detachment of four EA-6A a/c that were assigned to CVW-5.

VAW-115 E-2B about to trap aboard USS Midway. The E-2 has a wide wingspan, so being on centerline at touchdown is critical. Across the deck are the Landing Signal Officers (LSO) who assist the pilots in making a good approach. The LSOs are squadron pilots aboard the ship and specially trained for this duty.
