Israel was the largest export customer for the Skyhawk. In IAF service, the Skyhawk was named as the Ayit (Eagle). Israel purchased an incredible number of 217 A-4s, plus another 46 that were transferred from US units in Operation Nickel Grass to compensate for large losses during the Yom Kippur War. The extended tailpipe was an Israeli modification. On 13 December 2015, all remaining IAF Skyhawks were retired from service. This 715 (former BuNO 159552) was delivered to the IDF in 1974. The extended tailpipe was an Israeli modification, the aircraft was then designated as AjitM.

AyitM of the Flight Training School during its landing at homebase Hatzerim. The Skyhawk (former US Navy BuNo 157434) was delivered as 44 to Israel in 1969. Reserialled to 544 in the seventies and withdrawn from use in December 2015.

Former US Navy BuNo 158492 was delivered to The Israeli Air Force in October 1972. It was withdrawn from use in 2015.

This Skyhawk II, locally named Ayit, was once stored at Ovda (2001) but transferred to Hatzerim from 2002. The aircraft is stored in bad condition in this dispersal area near the Israeli Air Force Museum.
