Jagdfliegergeschwader 2 was based at Neubrandenburg/Trollenhagen. It had recently changed from MiG-21PFM to MiG-21M. The latter were reserialled with German registrations in the 22+xx range, also the old MiG-21SPS-K were. However, some shelters held three stored MiG-21PFM that were kept out of the books. These were destined for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, but ended up being scrapped.

Unfortunately, most JG 2 machines were scrapped in 1993. Only a handful MiG-21M remain, even less if you discard some of the noses that remained after scrapping.

Just in time, or just too late? In October 1990 work was well in progress to rid all the former East German aircraft of their markings and apply German serials. During our visit all roundels were already removed, but the serials remained in situ.
