A common sight those days, the Iscargo DC-6 on standby at Rotterdam Zestienhoven. It was operating a weekly Rotterdam - Reykjavik cargo flight.

Operated by Iscargo and seen here (without titles) just three months after delivery ex Fred Olsen LN-FOL. Originally N37592 with United Air Lines. Retired from service Apr 1980.

With Iscargo from Dec 79 to Mar 82 and then to Eagle Air as TF-VLN. Ended up as N4465F with JBQ Aviation and was damaged beyond repair 14 Jul 90. From the ASN report: The no. 3 propeller gearbox failed, causing the prop to separate. A broken propeller blade struck the no. 4 propeller, which also separated. A propeller then crossed under the aircraft slicing through the fuselage, cables, hydraulics and pressure vessel, damaging the no. 2 engine.The no. 2, 3 and 4 engines were shut down. An emergency landing was carried out at Aruba with no brakes, 10deg flaps and limited flight controls.

Got a highly memorable ride on this from SEN to RTM - the Captain wanted to give the F/O some practice so he made him take off with his windscreen completely obscured by a clipboard. I recall the church at the end of Southend's 5250ft runway 24 looming up ahead and thinking this was starting to look very scary! Originally United's 'Cargoliner Chicago' (N37592) in 1956 and then to Fred Olsen as LN-FOL ten years after. Nose now preserved in Iceland

After flying for Western and JAL this DC-6 moved to Iceland in 1969 and was flown in the Biafran War on behalf of UNICEF by Fragtflug, like sister ship TF-OAB. She ended her days with Iscargo (see also TF-IUB) being wfu in 1977 and b/u in 1983
