On display for many years in its final identity, N534J, in 2007 this Dragon was repainted in its smart 1950 colours as it flew for Great Lakes Carbon as N61Y. Originally delivered to the USAAC in 1950 as 39-051, the B-23 was based on the DC-3 and intended as a replacement for the B-18, which had in turn been based on the DC-2. Only 38 were built and the type never saw combat.

slide scan from the NK collection. - N76Y has been operated as a company transport since it was built in 1954, the first ten years as a -340 version, and as a -580 version after the rebuilt to turboprop in 1964. It was sold to AVENSA in 1984.

Delivered to the USAAF in July 1940 as 39-51. Became NX61Y in Apr 1945 and served with the Great Lakes Carbon Corp. (GLC) from Aug 1950 until Jan 1953. Later to N34C, N534C, N230SU and N534J. Traded with the USAF Museum in May 1971 and loaned to the Pima mueum in 1973. Originally displayed in its faded last civil livery as N534J, but fully restored in the nice Great Lakes Carbon Corp. colours in 2007 and rolled-out as such on 15 Aug 2007. Note the small GLC logo on the tail, which was carried by all GLC aircraft.

This is a very rare aircraft and is very well preserved at the Pima Air Museum.

Possibly its first European visit... It was also used for fishing trips in the U.S.A.
