Crashed near Port Mollar, Alaska, on April 30, 1924. This was the lead aircraft in the four-aircraft attempt to circumnavigate the world. The other three pressed on until Boston, under tow, sunk near the Faroes . The remaining two, Chicago and New Orleans, succeeded in completing the epic flight. The Douglas DWC was a DT torpedo bomber modified for the US Army Air Service's 'World Flight' project. This was the prototype. The four series aircraft left Seattle to fly around the world westward on 6 April 1924, using both floats and wheels. One crashed in Alaska and another one, Boston, was lost off the Faroes. After crossing the Atlantic, the two survivors were joined in Nova Scotia by the prototype, now named Boston II, for the remainder of the flight to Seattle. The floats were exchanged for wheels here in Boston. The aircraft still wears its McCook Field code P318. Photo by: Leslie Jones / Boston Public Library

On display at the National Air and Space Museum. The 'Chicago' was one of two U.S. Army Air Service airplanes to complete the first round-the-world flight in 1924. Starting from Seattle, the westwards flight took 175 days to accomplish. 'Chicago' was flown by Lt. Lowell Smith and Lt. Leslie Arnold. The 'New Orleans' was the other World Cruiser to finish the historic flight, as 'Seattle' and 'Boston' were damaged en route.
