The He 116 was designed as a long-range mailplane. This is the first prototype, first flown on 9 December 1936. Here it wears a Lufthansa paint scheme, but no titles. In January 1938 it was renamed Lübeck by DLH. 17 He 116s appear to have been built, including two for Japan and twelve He 116A (not He 116B) reconnaissance aircraft for the Luftwaffe, which were used for cartographic flights over friendly territory.
