25 Feb '44: TOS USAAF while on the production line as a B-25J at Kansas City; had it ferried to the Inglewood, CA, plant for conversion to General Eisenhower's staff plane, designated VB-25J. All guns and turrets were removed, bomb bay sealed for bunk and extra fuel tank. Aft of the bomb bay, seats, a full-width table, and a walnut cabinet were installed. Windows were cut in the sides and the interior was insulated and covered in blue fabric over paneling. Commercial airline seats were obtained from Douglas Aircraft. Continued as staff plane until 12/58. 1984: SDASM. This photo is copyright © Glenn Chatfield, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
