Pictured when it was flying freight for Soundair, this Howard 500 was originally built as Lockheed Ventura Bu 34903. It was allocated to the Royal Air Force but instead diverted to the South African Air Force as 6488. Stored after a crash for some time, it was sold to Howard Aero in 1959. Re-built and operated civilly, the aircraft was converted to a Howard 500 in 1964. Only with Soundair for a year, the last owner was the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston, TX. It was substantially damaged during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This photo is copyright © Gary Vincent, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
