While the D-4 retained the propeller within the fuselage of the earlier D-1 and D-2 aircraft, it had one engine, not two. Two D-4s were built for the USN. One crashed but the other arrived in 1919. It was entered in the 1922 Curtiss Marine Trophy Race but did not finish.
