The prototype Vimy after modification with Samson engines. The work was done at RAF Joyce Green. This aerodrome had canvas hangars like that in the photo and it is assumed the photo was taken at Joyce Green. Vickers consolidated its aircraft manufacturing at Brooklands after World War I. B9952 was allocated the registration G-EAAR but does not appear to have been painted on the aircraft. The registration was cancelled in May 1920. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Received P number P-55. Dismantled in september 1922 and sent to 'Museum'. It is not clear to us if this is McCook Field or Wright Field. Wright Field replaced McCook Field in 1927 as US Army aviation's technical base, but already played a role earlier. Photo from: Museum of Flight

While the D-4 retained the propeller within the fuselage of the earlier D-1 and D-2 aircraft, it had one engine, not two. Two D-4s were built for the USN. One crashed but the other arrived in 1919. It was entered in the 1922 Curtiss Marine Trophy Race but did not finish. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

Only one Supermarine Baby fighter flew. The second, N60, became spares for the first and work on the third was abandoned. Location almost certainly Port Victoria where the RAF, and the RNAS before it, had a marine aircraft testing station. C8659 a protype Airco DH-10 Amiens fitted with two 360 hp Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engines, this aircraft flying for the first time on 20th April 1918. The Airco DH10 Amiens was a twin engine medium size bomber designed by Geoffrey de Havilland for use in World War 1, but arrived too late see any real active war service. The DH-10 aircraft was eventually withdrawn from RAF service in April 1923. Scanned from an official reprinted de Havilland photograph (No 6198D), date and photographer unknown.

The SAML S.1 was a development of the German Aviatik B.1 which had been licence-built in Italy. It had more than double the horsepower of B.1 and although considered obsolete, remained in service until the end of World War I and beyond. In contrast, the Aviatik, a design that dated back to 1912, was largely gone by the end of 1916. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

Twenty Kangaroos were built with about half becoming airliners after World War I. B9974 does not appear to have been of them. The pristine condition of the aircraft means the photo was probably taken at Brough which was the site of the Blackburn factory. This cannot be confirmed. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

Sold in the US after the war ended. Canadian Aeroplanes was the government-owned former Curtiss factory at 1244 Dufferin Street. It is not clear if there was an airstrip at the factory. The factory occupied six acres and all photos of aircraft there were taken inside the building. Captions on those photos suggest the aircraft left the factory dismantled. The RFC had two training airfields a short distance to the factory. Library and Archives Canada
