While the D-4 retained the propeller within the fuselage of the earlier D-1 and D-2 aircraft, it had one engine, not two. Two D-4s were built for the USN. One crashed but the other arrived in 1919. It was entered in the 1922 Curtiss Marine Trophy Race but did not finish. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

Gallaudet D-2 was powered by two 150hp engines buried in the fuselage and driving a propeller that turned between the cockpits and tail with only the blades exposed. Larger versions, the D-3 and D-4, were built. Fatal test flight accidents ended the concept. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland
