Boeing engineers designed the 727 to serve smaller airports with shorter runways as well as major hubs. The high lift devices built into the jet's wing were major advances to allow that. With Krueger hinged flaps placed at the in board leading edge of the wing, extendable leading edge slats outboard and triple-slotted Fowler flaps on the trailing edge, the aircraft was said it didn't merely deploy flaps - it disassembled its wing.
