Replica on display in the Transportation Gallery at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago. This is the 1903 Flyer that Orville Wright flew from a prone position at Kitty Hawk on the morning of 17 Dec 1903. A 12hp offset engine drove two contra-rotating propellers. The aircraft was launched off a 60 ft. monorail track. The world's first powered, controlled and sustained flight lasted 12s. and covered 120 ft. Wilbur and Orville took turns till Wilbur covered 852 ft. in 59s. in the fourth flight, after which it was damaged and never flew again.
