Replica on display in the Transportation Gallery at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago. This is the 1903 Flyer that Orville Wright flew from a prone position at Kitty Hawk on the morning of 17 Dec 1903. A 12hp offset engine drove two contra-rotating propellers. The aircraft was launched off a 60 ft. monorail track. The world's first powered, controlled and sustained flight lasted 12s. and covered 120 ft. Wilbur and Orville took turns till Wilbur covered 852 ft. in 59s. in the fourth flight, after which it was damaged and never flew again.

Displayed in Dahlgren Hall at the US Naval Academy. This is a replica of the Navy's first heavier-than-air aircraft, the Flyer B-1. The replica was constructed by Wright Experience Inc of Warrenton, VA, based on original plans. The original B-1 was delivered to this very same building in September 6, 1911, and made its first flight the following day.

Built at Hatfield in 1948 and acquired by the Museum in that year.

The one and only Wright Flyer.

The National Air & Space Museum opened in 1976, one year before I took this slide. The Wright Flyer was suspended in the entrance atrium along with the Spirit of St. Louis, the Bell X-1, and the North American X-15. More recently, the Flyer had its own display gallery.

The world famous Wright Flyer, with which Orville and Wilbur Wright wrote history on December 17, 1903. The flight only lasted 12 seconds in which the aircraft reached an altitude of FL00003 for a distance of 36m. In 1909, Charles de Lambert made the first motorized flight above the Netherlands in a Wright Flyer. This marked the start of motorized aviation in the country. This replace has been in the colelction sicne 1960 as Wright Flyer 1. It was converted to a Wright Flyer Type A in 1994.

Normally I don't photograph very early aeroplanes but being in Dayton, home of the Wright Brothers, of powered flight and the first airport... it would be rude not to! This original Flyer is a modified version of the Type B Flyer, the major modifications are the installation of an eight-cylinder Rausenberger engine instead of the original four-cylinder Wright engine and the addition of ailerons on the trailing edges of the wings in place of the Wrights' wing warping design.

This is the aircraft that started it all, the first powered aircraft. When I visited the Smithsonian in 1978 it was suspended from the roof of the museum as seen here but on a more recent visit (2004) it has a hall to itself.

On static display at the Avalon Airshow 2007. Built by the group of enthusiasts at Narromine Airport in NSW, Australia, this replica of the Wright Brothers Flyer has accumulated over 50 hours flying time since its first flight on 27 September 2005

An interesting juxtaposition: less than 40 years apart in design. Qantas Connies used to come to Narromine for crew training fifty years ago. Two aircraft types with a lot of history behind them.
