On display on the flight deck of museum ship CV-10 USS Yorktown. The Phantom wears the markings of VMFA-333 "Fighting Shamrocks" that goes back to VMSB-333 activated on 1 Aug 1943. The unit moved from the F-8 Crusader to the F-4 in 1966. Deployed aboard CVA-66 USS America, it arrived on Yankee Station on 13 Jul 1972. On 11 Sep 1972 Maj. Lee T. Lasseter and RIO Capt. J. Cummings shot down a MiG-21 near Hanoi but were hit by a SA-2, forcing the crew to eject over the sea. It was the only all-Marine kill during the Vietnam War. VMFA-333 was the last regular USMC unit to operate the Phantom. This photo is copyright © Arjun Sarup, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
