Continuing expansion allowed by deregulation, Piedmont Airlines added some thirty-three used 727-200s in the early to mid 1980s to reach the US West coast. This former Western Airlines airliner (1977 - 84) would merge into US Air's fleet as N749US in 1989. It was next flown by American Transair 1996 - 2001 registered N784AT. The aircraft would last fly with Astar Air Cargo (2005 - 2006) until stored at Kingman, AZ in DHL colors.
