A Phönix D.III impressed after performing in Stockholm after WWI. It was bought by the Swedes in April 1920 with another twenty pieces following in three months later. The original Hiero engines were replaced by the German six-cylinder BMW.IIIa by 136 kW between 1922-1923. Three aircraft were still in service at the time of that the Flygvapnet was established in July 1926, when they were given the designation J 1. The last aircraft conducted meteorological tests in 1936 and is now on display at this super museum. This photo is copyright © Alastair T.
