The original Hiero engines were replaced by the German six-cylinder BMW.IIIa by 136 kW between 1922-1923. Three aircraft were still in service at the time of that the Flygvapnet was established in July 1926, when they were given the designation J 1. A German Albatros B.II was damaged during a stopover in Stockholm in 1914 but WWI broke out before it could be repaired. The B.II was copied by the Swedes with 40 examples produced at various workshops around Sweden. This aircraft was built at Flygkompaniet's fabric workshops in Malmslätt in 1925 and given the c/n 464. It was one of eight of the original forty aircraft that were transferred to the Flygvapnet when it was formed in 1926 and given the designation Sk 1. A new Flygvapnet serial 04 was assigned and placed at the flying school at F 5 Ljungbyhed where it flew until SOC in 1929.

The Phönix D.I / D.II / D.III was an Austro-Hungarian WWI fighter based on the Hansa-Brandenburg D.I. Only a few D.IIIs were completed before the end of the war. Sweden purchased 17 Phönix 222s. Ten more were built under licence by FVM at Malmen in 1925-1926. In 1926 the type received the J1 designation for a fighter, although it was by then used only as a trainer.

Designed by Ernst Heinkel and first flown in 1914, the Albatros B.II was the main German reconnaissance aircraft early in WWI, despite the poor view for the observer who sat in the front cockpit. It was also an important trainer. One B.II was interned in Sweden at the outbreak of the war, and the design was copied and manufactured by several Swedish companies.
