This is a license-built Goodyear FG-1D , which is similar to the Vought F4U-1D. During WWII, Goodyear built 4006 Corsairs, 1997 of which were FG-1Ds. This particular aircraft was only taken up in 1945, so it may not have seen combat action. It has been painted to represent a VF-17 aircraft, the first unit to use the Jolly Rogers symbol in 1943 when operating Corsairs out of the Solomon islands. Other USN units later took over the Jolly Rogers badge, such as VF-61 and VF-84. This photo is copyright © Jonathan Verschuuren, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
