Mangere aerodrome was the home of Auckland Aero Club from 1928. Its club house is centre of the photo. Union Airways used Mangere from 1935 and its hangar is bottom of the photo. Airline services moved to RNZAF Whenuapai, which had sealed runways, in 1947. Whenuapai was unable to handle 707s and DC-8s, so a new Auckland airport was needed. The Mangere site was selected. In 1961 the aero club moved to Ardmore and the old airport closed. The new Auckland airport at Mangere opened in 1965. Photo from: Whites Aviation Collection/Alexander Turnbull Library

The first aircraft built by William Boeing. This was Bluebill. When Boeing and his partner Conrad Westervelt were unable to interest the USN Navy they sold Bluebill and sister ship Mallard to the New Zealand Flying School. Bluebill became "F" in the school's fleet. The flying school became the basis of the New Zealand air force in 1926. Obsolete aircraft such as the Boeings were burnt but rumours have persisted they are sealed in a cave near Auckland. Photo from: Anton Berntsen/Alexander Turnbull Library
