Photo taken in China during the first combat mission for the B-29s in the China-Burma-India theatre. A 40BG aircraft based at Chakulia, India, it would have staged through Xinjin (then known as Hsinching). Each B-29 base in India was paired with a Chinese forward deployment field. 42-6331 was declared war weary and converted to a fuel transport. G-AGKT was provided by BOAC to Qantas to operate from Australia to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) replacing Catalinas. The long-haul route avoided Japanese airspace and opened a quicker route to the UK than via the Pacific and the US. -AGKT, stripped of paint, continued with Qantas after the war and was the first Qantas aircraft to carry the kangaroo logo. Withdrawn from use in 1947, it was scrapped at Sydney airport without entering the Australian register. Photo from: Hudson Fysh Collection/State Library of New South Wales

This Mosquito FB.VI served 613 (City of Manchester) Squadron on active operations between 26 April 1944 and 10 March 1945, latterly when based at Cambrai-Epinoy in northern France. It has just been painted in 'D-Day stripes' for low level operations over Normandy to support the Allied landings. The stripes partially obscure its serial and code. Obtained 50 years ago.
