Emergency is an Italian NGO, offering life support for civilian war victims (as indicated by the titles). The aircraft also carries very small blue "Operated by Aeroportul Internațional Mărculești" titles. This 1988 built An-72 was delivered to the Soviet AF as CCCP-72933, it was transferred as ER-72933 to Moldovan AF in 1994. The Vichi Air Company, an asset of the Moldavan AF, used the aircraft as ER-AFZ from 2000 to 2003. In Sep 2003 the air force took it back as 72933, but from Mar 2004 the An-72 was "civil" owned again with AIM. That company -still with links to the military- lost its AOC in 2007.

This 1964 An-12B first flew with the Soviet Air Force and was transferred as 61 Blue to the Ukrainian Air Force in 1992. From early 2004 it continued to fly in a basic 'blue' Aeroflot c/s with misspelled "Ukraine Cargo Airways" titles and a 'UCA' logo on the fin. The An-12 was possibly cancelled from the register on 31 December 2008 with only 7,793 flight hours. The aircraft was withdrawn from use at Mykolaiv International Airport, also known as Nikolaev Airport (Ukraine) and offered in an auction as scrap metal on 20 December 2019, but there were no bidders. Current fate unknown.

This '88 built Mi-8 was delivered as 18 Orange to the Russian Army at Brandis, later on it was recoded to 12 Blue at Werneuchen, both in former East Germany. It was most probably moved to Chechnya were it was illegally sold after it suffered an accident in '93. The Afghan MiI possibly took over the Mi-8 and used it with the Afghan Special Narcotics Force (as this picture shows), but c/n is not confirmed. Probably 95059 was damaged beyond eco repair on 27 March '06 in a hard landing in the Spin Ghar district (Nangarhar province) after technical issues, all 9 crew and passengers escaped unhurt.

Stored at Kabul was this Czech built (1977) L-39C Albatros. It was cannibalized in 2005/2006 timeframe to keep two other L-39Cs, in the back ground of this picture, in the air. Serial 005 never flew again, as the two operational Afghan National Army - Air Corps (ANA-AC) were phased out early 2006. 005 was last noted, still withdrawn from use, at Kabul in 2014.

A component of the German Transalls was dedicated to special operations support, these machines being fitted with modernized flight system / navigation avionics, and cockpits compatible with night vision goggles (NVGs). These aircraft - reportedly some 24 - received an external modification on the side of the fuselage just in front of the wings. The EloKa self-defense system was developed to enhance the Transall's self-protection capabilities during missions flown in support of the German ISAF Troops operating in Afghanistan.

A VIP jet in a war zone. The Gulf was delivered as N100AR in August 1989 and was reregistered to N100GX in March 1999. In June 2004 The IV was transferred to the Chinese Deer Jet as B-8080. By February 2014 the VIP jet returned to the US and received N483DJ with Wells Fargo Bank. That broker transferred the jet to Grady International Inc. by December 2016. This Herc C4 was sadly written off on 12 February 2007 during a movement of troops to a Tactical Landing Zone (TLZ) in Maysaan province, Iraq. After a Tactical Air Traffic Controller at the TLZ approved the landing, the landing went uneventful until the crew experienced a load bang and a bright flash during touch-down, caused by two IEDs. The aircraft slewed off the left-hand side of the runway and a left wing fire started The captain brought the aircraft to an immediate halt. Damage to the C4 appeared too large, so the aircraft was blown up on the scene.

Several unmarked Mi-8s flew secretive missions over Afghanistan. The helicopters were parked on an isolated platform. Personnel nearby were often very cagey in their behaviour. But sometimes... the helicopters were parked alone, the moment for a picture taken from a passing car... The small HIP fleet was linked to the Blackwater, an American private military company.
