Triad 84 saw USAF F-16s, RAAF Mirage III and RNZAF A-4 based at Ohakea. The hangars either side of the tower were built in 1939 to house the RNZAF's Wellingtons, which were never delivered after they were donated to the RAF. A shortage of structural steel in New Zealand meant the hangars had to be made from reinforced concrete. Even the doors are concrete. The arched hangars have been reroofed with steel but remain in use. Two similar hangars were erected at Whenuapai. Photo from: RNZAF/Air Force Museum of New Zealand

503 on the rudder is the last three numbers of its USAAF serial 511503. NZ2413 was essentially delivered into storage after World War II ended. It was finally delivered to an operational squadron in July 1952. Withdrawn from use in 1955 and scrapped in 1958. Photo from: Air Force Museum of New Zealand
