The Junkers Ju 86 was designated B3 in Sweden, and this is the sole surviving Ju 86. The type was designed as a bomber and airliner in competition with the Heinkel He 111, and first flew in 1934. In the German Luftwafffe it had largely been replaced as a bomber by the outbreak of WWII although it was developed into a high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft.

The United Nations intervened when the province of Katanga tried to separate from the freshly independent Belgian Congo in 1960. Sweden sent a small squadron of Tunnans which saw actual combat against Katangese forces. Swedish roundels were overpainted with white UN markings. A very interesting static exhibit at the Malmen airshow, no longer on display in the adjacent museum.

Developed in Sweden during WWII when buying foreign aircraft had become impossible, the J22 was a fine fighter limited by its copied R-1830 Twin Wasp engine. Saab's J21R jet fighter retained the long legs of the J21A propeller plane, and compared to the otherwise rather similar Vampire it seems to stand twice as high!
