The Lightning never really looked its best in camo so here is a well-known example in its original 11 Sqdn colours. XR724 was later allocated to BAe at Warton as chase aircraft in Tornado radar development trials and was then flown into storage at Shawbury. Tendered the by MoD in 1991, it was purchased by the Lightning Association and flown to Binbrook on 23.7.92 where attempts to restore the airframe and keep it in running condition have been frustrated by the disposal of the airfield and accommodation issues

Seen here with 617 Sqdn's distinctive dam-buster insignia, XL425 was built as a B.2 Blue Steel and delivered to 83 Sqdn at Scampton on 30.8.62. She was converted to 'free-fall' in 1970 and allocated to 617 in 11.72, 27 Sqdn in 11.73, and back to 617 in 4.74, finally meeting the scrapper's axe at Scampton in 6.82

One of my earliest Kodachromes, at the Battle of Britain Day. This Scampton Wing Vulcan, still resplendent here in the original glossy camouflage, was delivered on 19.7.62 and lost on 11.8.78 when it crashed practicing for a display at Glenview NAS, Chicago. Note the Isaacs Fury II 7/10ths scale replica G-ASCM in the foreground

Looking very smart in RAF Air Support Command's unique sand camo, this Argosy carrying the cobra emblem of 114 Sqdn was an unusual visitor to Southend, although the type did make appearances at the splendid airshows there in 1968 and 1970. First flying in 8.62, she was wfu at Shawbury just four months after this photo then moved to Kemble from 2.72, being broken up there in 1975

There were five BAC 111s in UK Military service and XX105 was the first, taken on strength from BUA/Caledonian in September 1971. Originally G-ASJD, after a formation flypast with the other two remaining Air Force 111s in service, it was retired June 2003 at Boscombe Down.
