Javelins of No 23 Sqn at RAF Coltishall. For a dedicated air defence fighter, the Javelin saw quite a bit of overseas service. XH778, in the foreground, was written off at Nicosia in Cyprus in 1963. Upgraded to FAW.9 standard, XH779 was shipped to Singapore in November 1964, becoming aircraft S of No 60 Sqn at Tengah. Withdrawn from active service in November 1966. Scrapped. As with several aircraft at the museum, the serial and squadron marks are fake. The correct serial is XH768 which retired from service with 29 squadron in November 1966 and was subsequently used as instructional airframe 7929M at RAF Cranwell. From there it was displayed at the Historic Aircraft Museum at Southend and went to Air Classik in Germany before moving to Italy in 1995. The aircraft underwent some restoration in 2022.

Delivered to the RAF as XH768 in 1959. Used as ground trainer 7929M at Cranwell from 1967. Moved to Southend for preservation in 1971. Sold after the museum closed in 1983 and moved to Monchengladbach, West Germany then to Museum Parco Tematico dell 'Aviazione, Cerasolo, Emilia Romagna, Italy in 1995.

Delivered to the RAF as XH992 in 1960. To Halton for use as ground trainer 7829M in 1964. Transported by road to the Newark Air Museum in 1981.

UK's only FAW.1 on display at RAFM Cosford. Gloster's last fighter was designed as RAF's first all-weather interceptor, entering frontline service in 1956 with No. 46 Sqn. at RAF Odiham. The FAW.1 was powered by a pair of Armstrong-Siddeley Sapphire Sa.6 10201 and 10301 engines of 36.9 kN thrust each that required a cartridge starter. The aircraft was fitted with the AI.17 radar and 30mm cannon. The initial production run of 40 FAW.1s also served as test platforms. A total of 435 Javelins were built and served in seventeen RAF squadrons plus OCUs, many being converted to different marks.

From my late fathers collection. My Dad was a pilot on the squadron at the time. Three Gloster Javelin FAW9R's of the RAF's 64 Squadron from RAF Tengah in Singapore May 1967. Taken from a fourth Javelin. Nearest is XH708 / P which crashed within days of this photo being taken. Furthest from camera is XH766. XH708 was delivered to the RAF on 11 July 1957 and crashed on 30 May 1967 in a collision with XH896 10 miles northwest of Tengah. The crew of XH708 were killed.

From my late fathers collection. A 64 Squadron Gloster Javelin FAW9R landing at RAF Tengah in Singapore. My father was a pilot on the squadron at the time.

This picture is in one of my late dad's log books when he was a pilot on 64 Sqn. He is flying the Javelin FAW9 XH707 / F over Malaysia with a 45 Sqn Canberra B15 and a 20 Sqn Hunter FGA9 coded A. It was also used as a front cover from the RAF publication 'Air Clues' and has the following caption. FAR EAST TRIO. Three 'RAF types' of the Far East Air Force are seen on a special formation flight along the Malaysian coast. They are a Javelin of No 64 Squadron, whose duties at Tengah have been taken over by the Mk 6 Lightnings of No 74 Sqn ; a Canberra of No 45 Sqn ; and a Hunter of No 20 Sqn.

This is from a cutting from the RAF Air Clues magazine which my Dad added to his log book. ' After completing a normal landing in a Javelin the pilot shut down the port engine, set the starboard at 50% rpm and taxied to the dispersal area. As he turned the aircraft into dispersal, the starboard main undercarriage collapsed.' This is my Dad's comment on the back of this photo 'Taxing at 10kts one sunny day.........'
