On delivery to the Oman Air Force with Jaguar OS serial 205.

During 1970, Romania and Yugoslavia began discussions on the subject of jointly developing a new ground-attack orientated fighter aircraft. These plans came to fruition and into service as the Craiova IAR-93 Vultur in Romania and the Soko J-22 Orao in Yugoslavia. Therefore although this particulat example is the Romanian version (it was accepted into the Fortele Aeriene Romane in December 1986) it is a fitting exhhibit at this super museum.

This IAR-93 was delivered to the Romanian Air Force as 206 in 1982. The last Romanian IAR-93 was mothballed in 1998, and 206 was preserved at Câmpia Turzii where it was last seen in Jul-2013. From there it went in 2014 to the Park Vojaške Zgodovine (Park of Military History) in Pivka, Slovenia.

Some hour drive from Kabul, a real massive scrapyard of the Afghan Army was found. Only a few sandy paths were cleared from land mines, so I couldn't reach this wreckage for an inspection of the type and construction number. It is possible that the debris surrounding 206 did not belong to 206 itself. What a mess...

Delivered in Aug 1969 as shown here, with its new serial ٢٠٦ (= 206) on fin and nose, and the old serial 55-713 (still with the dropped Mark number prefix) on the rear fuselage. The Lightning was the last type to use Saudi Arabia's old Mark number prefix system. In the mid 1980s the 21 remaining RSAF Lightnings were acquired by British Aerospace as part of the Tornado F.3 deal. This example was allocated serial ZF598 and flown to Warton, UK on 14 Jan 1986 and stored. It went to the Midland Air Museum on 19 Jan 1989. The Saudi tail and nose markings were added recently (still missing in Jul 2008).
