Former USAF 82-0984 was delivered after an overhaul at Ogden Air Logistic Center (Hill AFB, UT) to Italy as part of a Foreign Military Sales contract, designated 'Peace Caesar' programme, to Aeronautica Militare Italiana. The contract was signed on 15 March 2001 and the aircraft was delivered to Italy in 2004. The aircraft was returned to the USA in 2012.

This Viper served as 82-1005 with the 11th FS/14th FW at Ellington Field, TX before being retired to AMARG during Nov. 96 where it was stored with the PCN/Inventory No. AAFG0393. The Italians rescued her from the desert and she served with their AF until May 2012 when she was welcomed once again to the boneyard.

While waiting for the Eurofighter, Italy leased 24 RAF Tornado ADVs in 1995 to replace some of its old Starfighters. Apparently the ADV failed to impress and it was replaced by yet another stop-gap, the F-16A/ADF, from 2003. Note the Advanced IFF antennae forward of the cockpit canopy of this F-16A variant, conceived for US Air National Guard air defence duties.
