The first YUH-61 was rolled out of the Boeing Vertol factory in Ridley Park, just west of PHL, on 9 September 1974 and the caption from Veriflite suggests the photo was taken there. The first flight was made from the Grumman factory airfield at Calverton, NY. The UH-61 lost the UTTAS (Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System) competition to the Sikorsky UH-60. The YUH-61 lost the United States Army Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) competition in the early 1970s to replace the Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter. Only three prototypes were built. At the end of the flyoff program, Sikorsky Aircraft was awarded a contract to develop and build its UH-60A entry. Preserved at the museum by 1982.

The YUH-61 was Boeing Vertol's unsuccessful competitor to Sikorsky's Black Hawk. The need to fit in a C-130 was even more appararent in this design. The photo shows the type's first flight, which took place at the Grumman factory airfield at Calverton, Long Island. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society
