This aircraft was the first jet powered aircraft to land and take off on an aircraft carrier, flown by the legendary Eric 'Winkle' Brown.

The /G at the serial is not a code. It denotes this airframe had to be guarded at all time. The circled yellow P means this is a prototype aircraft.

This venerable old Sea Vampire has had an eventful service life including being; the first jet aircraft to land on a ship at sea, damaged when undercarriage 'up' was selected on the ground and being damaged during arrester barrier trials at RAE Farnborough. She has certainly earned her retirement on board the FAA Museum's 'aircraft carrier' at Yeovilton.

The second prototype Vampire wearing the early period scheme including "P for prototype" in yellow circle. First flew 17.03.44 and LCdr E.M.Brown made the first carrier landing on HMS Ocean on 03.12.45. Later to RAE Farnborough for further trials and now preserved.

This display in the FAA Museum is a tribute to Eric 'Winkle' Brown, the test pilot who died on 21 February 2016 aged 97. Flown by Brown, this Vampire became the first jet to land on an aircraft carrier on 3 December 1945. It is a prototype Vampire, first flown on 17 Mach 1944.
