My late father taking a joy ride over Coventry, Warwickshire, in the Avro 504N (owned by Herbert Basil Goldwyn Michelmore) operated by Tom Campbell-Black's flying circus. He was 15 and it was his first flight. He evidently became "hooked" as he went on to fly Lancasters with No. 626 Sqdn, RAF.

Relations between Belgium and Holland were not without issues after WWI and this Belgian visit to Soesterberg was an official affair, led by Lt Gen Gillieaux. The Dutch army air force commander, Maj Van Santen, must have felt outgunned! According to Dutch newspaper reports, five Avro 504Ns from the flying school at Wevelgem were involved, and X-12 wears the school's familiar pinguin emblem. First flown in 1913, the Avro 504 had a very long life for an aircraft of its era. The modernized 504N, with a radial engine and a new undercarriage, appeared in 1925 and was a standard trainer in the RAF until 1933. This airframe was one of three built by the Danish Orlogsvaerftet (Naval Yard).
