Built 1941. Still currently registered August 2024.

The writing on the fuselage says "Flying Service U.S. Government Approved Flying School". The operator's was Sampson (Sam) Held who was based in Hangar 6 at Floyd Bennett. He went on to be a Lockheed test pilot. Sam Held was killed in 1948 in P-51 NX28388 which was owned by air race pilot Jacqueline Cochran. NC23230 was cancelled from the register in 1944. On display during Malta International Airshow 2021

In 1941 Piper donated one Cub, NC1776, to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund. Piper dealers ordered another 50 J-3s, each named after a US state in small print on the nose. The so-called 'Flitfires' are seen here in New York for a fund-raising event following a formation flight from Lock Haven. The aircraft subsequently went to the respective dealers and never trained RAF pilots in a coherent manner. First time on public display having been restored to flying condition by the Malta Aviation Museum.

I logged my first hour of dual instruction in this aircraft when I was 13 years old, a few months before I took this photo in the summer of 1980.

Currently under restoration and wearing a US Army jacket. On display at the aviation museum at the former airfield of Ta' Qali.

A long-time resident of this very pretty little GA field on the banks of the Tennessee River. There are beautiful,old, historic aircraft to be found in every nook and cranny of the US.
