This aircraft was captured at Iraq after a wheels-up landing at Mosul. While ostensibly an Iraqi air force aircraft, it was in reality flown by a Luftwaffe unit based in Iraq. The RAF repaired the Bf110, gave it an RAF serial and flew it to Egypt. HK846 was handed to 267 Squadron for use as a communications aircraft in North Africa. It was to be sent to South Africa to train pilots in German equipment. However HK846 belly-landed in Sudan on the way south and was not repaired. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

On display at the first open day at the IWM Duxford facility and still crated, ex-IWM, Lambeth. Rudolph Hess crashed this aircraft in Scotland on May 10th 1941, apparently on his way to try to negotiate a cease-fire with the British. Still displayed in 2022.

During the winter of 1940 this 110 was based in Northern Norway when it was forced to make an emergency landing on frozen Lake Upmasjaure in Sweden. The following Spring the ice melted and the aircraft sank to the bottom where it remained until salvaged some 50 years later. The recovered remains are now on display at the super Technikmuseum Speyer.
