It looks like a toy plane but, uprated to still only 145 hp and with clipped wings, this Monocoupe was a winning racing aircraft. In the 1934 London to Melbourne Air Race it came as far as Calcutta flown by John Polando and owner Jack Wright who was from Utica, NY. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

John Livingston won 41 air races in this modified, clipped-wing aircraft which was originally a Monocoupe 110. He sold it to Jack Wright of Utica, NY and it took part in the London to Melbourne Air Race flown by Wright and John Polando. They had to abandon at Calcutta. Aircraft sponsored by the maker of the Baby Ruth candybar. (The company denied that the bar was named after famous baseball player Babe Ruth.) Interestingly, the swimmer, actress and aviatrix Ruth Wells Barron was the plane's next owner. Unfortunately she was killed in it on 3 July 1936 after it caught fire over Omaha, Nebraska. The 110 Special was a clipped-wing version of the 110 and made for a fast and maneuverable sport plane. 'Little Butch', named after it's bulldog-like appearance, is now on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

The Monocoupe 110 Special was designed in 1931 as a 'cut down' racing aircraft. Wing span reduced from 32 feet to 23 feet. The 125 hp Warner Scarab gave a top speed of 220 mph. This example is preserved in the EAA AirVenture Museum.
