Rare FB-5 with the emblem of VF-6B on display at Planes of Fame Air Museum. Originally A-7104, this is one of just 27 constructed for the U.S. Navy. They were delivered from the Boeing factory in Seattle on 21 Jan 1927 by placing the aircraft on a barge in Seattle Harbour and sent to the awaiting CV-1 USS Langley, from where they made their first flights. FB-5s were USN's first fighters intended for carrier operations. These aircraft served with VF-1 on USS Langley, VF-6B aboard USS Saratoga, VF-3B at San Diego and finally with Marine squadron VF-6M "Red Devils."

One of 27 frames that were built for the US Navy. The FB-5 was the successor of the FB-1 and first flew on October 7, 1926. It featured a stronger engine, increased positive wing stagger and an aerodynamically balanced rudder with increased area (the latter not in the first frame however). 27 frames were produced, A-7101 to A-7127. While Boeing manufactured the Thomas-Morse MB-3 for the Air Force, the PW-9 was the first fighter designed and built by Boeing. The FB was the Navy / Marine version and 27 FB-2s were the first Navy aircraft built specifically for carrier operations.

On display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, National Air and Space Museum. The FB-5 was Boeing's first true carrier-borne fighter. This model saw service with VF-1 on USS Langley, VF-6B aboard USS Saratoga, VF-3B at San Diego and finally with Marine squadron VF-6M 'Red Devils'. Restoration of the aircraft was done by the USMC.

This FB-5 is on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. This Hawk was assigned to Navy Squadron VF-1, aboard the USS Langley, in Jan. 1927. After eight months it was transferred to VF-6B aboard the USS Saratoga and then to VF-3B at San Diego in April 1928. Afer some modifications it was assigned to Marine fighter squadron VF-6M on March, 1930, serving briefly with that unit until being stricken from the Navy inventory in July 1930.

The Boeing Model 15 Hawk was produced in two series with 'FB' being the Naval version. This FB-5 was delivered to the US Navy as A-7104 but has been restored and is now on display at the Planes of Fame museum as A-7126.

The Boeing 15 fighter served with the US Army as the PW-9 and with the Navy as the FB. The FB-5 model was the USN's first true carrier fighter. I understand it used 'grapple hooks' on an axle between the main wheels that this survivor doesn't have. The tail skid looks intriguing. Also the navigation light on the wing tip seems enormous, but this is mostly a wide angle effect.
