Roscoe Turner in the Meteor racer that was built for him. The photo must have been taken in 1939 as Champion was his sponsor that year. Almost 44 years old, Turner announced his retirement from racing after winning the 1939 Thompson Trophy race. The Meteor is in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC since 2022. With this aircraft the famed racing pilot Roscoe Turner became the only three-time winner of the Thompson Trophy (his first win in 1934 was in a different aircraft). He retired from racing to manage the Turner Aeronautical Corporation in Indianapolis until his death in 1970. This racer hung in a prominent place from the rafters of his main hangar until restored and placed in the Turner Museum. With the closing of his museum in late 1972, the racer was gratefully received by the NASM.
