Red 2 on display at RAF Museum Hendon. This Volksjäger was built at Heinkel-Nord and delivered to II./JG1 at Marienehe. I./JG1 would pick up their jets from the factory to operate out of Parchim. In the final weeks of WW2, JG1 "Oesau" had to move to Ludwigslust, Warnemünde and finally to Leck, where on 30 Apr 1945 I. and II./JG1 were combined into I. (Einsatz)/JG1 and II. (Sammel)/JG1. Fuel shortages curtailed the wing from flying their jets. The aircraft was surrendered to the Allies on 6 May 45. Post WW2 it was stored at RAF Colerne and restored in 1976, moving to the museum in 1989.

This jet was captured by the British troops at Leck on 15 May 1945 as "Weisse 21". It was selected to go to the French Air Force for investigation and test flights in 1946. Around 1950 it was sent to the Rochefort-Sur- Mer Air Force mechanics school for instructional use, and it received a bordaux-red color scheme. Later the aircraft arrived at Le Bourget Halle B in 1975 and received green overall paint scheme. Mid 2010 it arrived at Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace near Paris, France as fake 120223. In June 2015 it received unit serial "Gelbe 21". Picture is part of my private slides collection.

Volksjäger on display at the Planes of Fame Air Museum. This He-162 of 2./JG 1 "Oesau" was flown by Staffelkapitän Ltn Gerhard Hanf from Leck. It carries the wolf's head emblem of III./JG 77, which was Hanf's previous unit based in Romania. The engine unit is painted in RLM 81 and the tail fins in RLM 76. After its capture, the aircraft went to Cherbourg in dismantled condition to be shipped to the USA. The He-162 was flown only once at Muroc Dry Lake by legendary test pilot Bob Hoover and donated to the Univ. of Kansas. It was acquired by Eddie Fisher and then Ed Maloney for the museum.

A magnificent exhibit, stunning. This aircraft was captured by the RAF in Leck in Germany towards the end of WWII. it was evaluated by the RAF and assigned the British serial VN679 in November 1945. Due to the shortage of metal towards the end of the war, the aircraft was built largely of wood.
