The TWA Starliner at JFK with the Retro terminal

Wide angle shot from the lounge in the TWA Hotel at JFK Airport. What a super cool place this is !! They have a hotel lobby and lounge that is like the terminal was in the 1950/60s.

Entered service with Trans World Airlines (TWA) in 1957. Converted to a freighter in 1960 and operated in Alaska from 1962 to 1972. Acquired by Maurice Roundy in 1983, flown to Auburn / Lewiston and parked outside his house together with stablemate N8083H. Both were purchased together with N974R in 2006 as an ambitious restoration project for Lufthansa, a former Starliner operator, to create a flying example in original airliner format. Rapidly escalating costs caused Lufthansa to terminate the project in 2018. Currently stored disassembled in Germany.

Alaska Airlines 1962, converted to bulk fuel carrier 1968 for use on the North Slope by Red Dodge Aviation and Prudhoe Bay Oil Distribution, stored Anchorage 1972, Kenai 1974. Onyx Aviastion 1974, Burns Aviation 1975. Abandoned Stewart-Newburgh, NY 1976. Acquired by Maurice Roundy 1983 and flown to Auburn-Lewiston, ME. Acquired by Lufthansa Berlin Stiftung 2006 together with N974R and N8083H, restoration started 2008 in a purpose built hangar. With costs soaring project was cancelled 2018 with the aircraft being dismantled.

Built in 1958 and sold to Trek Airways as ZS-DVJ in 1964. In 1967 it was painted in Luxair livery as LX-LGX and operated non-stop flights between Europe and South Africa to get around Apartheid related sanctions. Retired in 1969 then used as a tourist attraction at a resort, in Trek livery, until it was acquired by the SAA Museum in 1988 and put on display at Rand Airport.

ZS-DVJ flew its last flight into a makeshift airstrip in Warmbaths, Transvaal (now Bela-Bela, Limpopo) on 9 October 1971 for display at the Klein Kariba Resort. It was donated to the SAA Museum and moved to Johannesburg for restoration and currently on display at the museum at Rand Airport. Photographer unknown

Wonderful

Delivered new in July 1957 and was destroyed on 10 May 1961 over the Sahara desert after a suspected bomb caused empennage failure.

Delivered in May 1957 and destroyed on 26 June 1959 when it suffered an explosion and structural break-up due to a lightning strike, near Milan, Italy.

F-BHBM 'De Grasse' was lost with all on board in May 1961 over Algeria, believed due to a bomb
